April Autumn Cleaning Guide: Set Your Home Up for Winter

The Easter long weekend is behind us, the mornings are cooler, and the leaves are turning. Here's your practical guide to getting your Sunbury home autumn-ready — room by room.

Luke and Nicole autumn cleaning guide

April in Sunbury and Melbourne is that sweet spot where summer is properly over, the heat has broken, and you can finally open the windows without sweating. It's also the last chance to get your home sorted before winter sets in.

We wrote about the March transition last month — if you ticked those off, you're ahead of the game. This month is about finishing what March started and adding the winter-prep tasks that'll make the next few months more comfortable.

1. The Autumn Deep Clean — Now or Never

If you haven't done a deep clean since spring, April is the time. Once winter hits, you'll be closing up the house, running heaters, and spending more time indoors. A deep clean now means you're starting winter with a fresh, healthy home.

What to focus on:

  • Behind and under furniture — dust bunnies from summer are hiding back there
  • Skirting boards and cornices — summer dust settles everywhere
  • Light fittings and ceiling fans — clean them before you stop using them
  • Inside cupboards — wipe down shelves and reorganise
  • Mattresses — vacuum and flip before putting on heavier bedding

Not sure if you need a deep clean or a regular clean? Read our guide on how often you should deep clean — or check the 5 signs your home is overdue.

2. Heating System Prep

Before you flick on the heater for the first time this season, do these:

  • Ducted heating: Vacuum the vents and grilles. Dust that's been sitting in there all summer will blow straight into your rooms.
  • Split systems: Clean or replace the filters. A dirty filter means poor air quality and higher energy bills.
  • Portable heaters: Wipe down and check for dust buildup. Dusty heaters can smell terrible when first turned on.
  • Fireplace: If you have a wood heater, get it serviced and the chimney cleaned before the first fire.

3. Window Cleaning — Last Call Before Winter

Clean windows = more natural light. And in winter, when the days are shorter and greyer, every bit of light matters. April is the perfect time for a professional window clean — inside and out, tracks and frames.

This is one of our busiest add-on services in April. If you want it done before winter, book early.

4. Tackle the Oven Before Roast Season

Autumn means comfort food — roasts, casseroles, baking. If your oven hasn't been cleaned since last winter, now's the time. Baked-on grease from months ago gets worse with heat and makes everything taste off.

Our professional oven cleaning starts from $132 and includes the interior, door, racks, trays, and rangehood. It's one of those jobs that makes a massive difference but nobody wants to do themselves.

5. Outdoor Areas — Last Chance

Before the rain really sets in, get your outdoor areas sorted:

  • Pressure wash the driveway and paths — autumn leaves + moisture = slippery surfaces. A pressure wash now prevents buildup and keeps things safe.
  • Clean gutters — autumn leaves are falling. Clear them before they block and cause water damage.
  • Store outdoor furniture — or at least cover it. Melbourne winter rain is relentless.
  • BBQ final clean — give it a proper clean before it sits unused for months.

6. Bedroom Winter Prep

The bedroom transition from summer to winter is more than just swapping the doona:

  • Wash the winter doona before putting it on — it's been stored for months
  • Vacuum the mattress and flip or rotate it
  • Wash pillows (they accumulate sweat and dust mites over summer)
  • Store summer bedding clean — don't put dirty sheets away until October
  • Dust bedroom furniture, especially under the bed

7. Bathroom Mould Prevention

Winter is mould season. Hot showers + cold air = condensation = mould. Get ahead of it now:

  • Check all grout lines for early signs of mould
  • Clean exhaust fans — they need to work properly through winter
  • Squeegee shower screens after every use (or at least daily)
  • Keep bathroom doors open after showering to let moisture escape
  • Consider a small dehumidifier if your bathroom doesn't have good ventilation

8. The April Cleaning Checklist

  • ☐ Deep clean completed (or booked)
  • ☐ Heating system checked and cleaned
  • ☐ Windows cleaned inside and out
